As part of the saving program for the Koin Dream Challenge, the children are taught that before money is saved, it should be earned. The trainers are always encouraged to emphasize to the children the importance of earning money the right way without breaking rules or going over their parent’s heads.
Many of the child savers we have under the program were accustomed to getting money from their parents, guardians or other adults in the form of gifts and allowances. It is from this money that they would take a portion and save some of it. In a bid to get them to boost their savings, however, and in line with our mission and vision, the team saw a need to come up with a manageable but sustainable way for the children to make their own money while maintaining their focus in studied.
Kidpreneur is a child entrepreneurship program under which the children are taught simple skills to enable them earn a little extra to boost their savings. Before the children are engaged in this program, consent is sought from parents, teachers and school authorities to ensure that there is full knowledge of what the child is doing. Once this is established, the children are taken through simple sessions in product development.
In the initial stages, the program focused on craft making, due to the age group in question and also for ease of monitoring. It was simple to teach the children how to make beaded crafts and supervise the process. Overtime however, the program has been improved to include more complex products. The children are now taken through the entire business cycle, from ideation to product development and value addition down to after sales services.
The major aim of this program is to ensure that child explore their entrepreneurial skill set from an early age and also learn the basics of earning at that stage still. The program however isn’t exclusive to complex business plans. The children are encouraged to work within their means to see their ideas cone to fruition so all ideas from the children are welcomed and the team does its best to fit them in the program.
A major challenge that the children encountered was marketing their products. The team has lined up a set of exhibitions to help the children sell their products. Noticeable, at all events after the launch of the program, the children were allowed to set up shop and showcase their products there my giving them market expose. The team is working round the clock to put in place a well established market system to ensure that all products get the level of exposure they deserve.
As part of the program, the children are also introduced to business men and women who have made a mark in their respective areas of expertise. This is to enable them get first hand from those already in the industry and also give them more relatable targets for their business.
